Oxshott is signed up with the Surfers Against Sewage programme to work towards a Plastic Free Community award. It's not about removing all plastic from our lives. It's about working together as a community to kick our addiction to avoidable single-use plastic, and to change the system that produces it. Whether you are a school, a club or community group, a business or an individual we hope that you will want to get involved in this joint effort to improve the environment right here in Oxshott and in all the far-flung places that our waste plastic finally ends up.

Read on to find out how to get involved. Please contact us if you would like to sign up your group, or your business or if you would like to help run this project.

We need Business Champions

Local independent businesses can sign up for their own Plastic Free Business Champion Award.  The award is tiered and you can work towards higher levels as you remove more and more plastic from your business.

To achieve the Plastic Free Champion Award a business needs to remove at least three single-use plastic items (eg. plastic bags, coffee cups and plastic drinks bottles) and show a commitment to tackling any others present in the business going forwards. Once this is in place, businesses get a Plastic Free Champion plaque and certificate to highlight their great work and tell customers and the wider community.  You can retro-fit previous actions so if you have always used paper bags rather than plastic, for example, you can include this for the first tier of your award.. plasticfree@oxshottnetzero.org.uk

We need Community Allies

Sign the Plastic Free Pledge and join in with local efforts to reduce single-use plastic by swapping out 3 items of single-use plastic. We hope you'll also get involved with things like events, talks or workshops and generally raising awareness around Oxshott. Schools, clubs, community groups, sports teams - whoever you are, if you want to join in we'd love to have you onboard. plasticfree@oxshottnetzero.org.uk

We need individuals

Check out the article below which appeared in the Oxshott Magazine with lots of tips for how to reduce your single-use plastic. From January 2025 zero waste shop Ecocentric Us will be bringing a stall to each Oxshott Repair Cafe (3rd Saturday of the month, Oxshott Community Hub, 10.00-12.30) so bring your bottles to refill and find all sorts of swaps for items of household plastic.

You can sign up with Plastic Free Communities for your individual action plan here.
